Bake the bog: yummy way of learning about bogs

At Dowra School, we delivered a hands-on learning experience that was both fun and educational
for the students. The children took part in an exciting project, where they learned all about the
importance of bogs in our ecosystem: how they are formed and why they play a vital role in fighting
climate change.

Bogs: natural carbon storage

Before diving into the creative part of the project, the children were introduced to bogs. They are
unique wetlands and can be found all over Ireland.
They have been formed over thousands of years, where waterlogged conditions slow down the
decomposition of plant matter. This process results in the build-up of peat, a rich source of organic
material.
The volunteers explained to the children that bogs are important carbon storage: meaning they
store carbon in the form of peat, which helps regulate greenhouse gases and mitigate the effects of
climate change. Unfortunately, activities like turf-cutting and drainage have damaged many of
these precious ecosystems, releasing stored carbon back into the atmosphere.

Why are bogs so important?

The students were amazed to discover that bogs provide more than just carbon storage. They also:
• Help manage water flow and reduce flooding by acting like sponges that absorb and release water
slowly.
• Are home to unique plants, animals, and insects that thrive in this wet environment.

A delicious creation

To illustrate the different parts of a bog, the children got to work on an edible version, complete
with cakes, brownies, and green jelly to represent the various layers of a real bog.
• Bottom layer (waterlogged peat) was represented by the brownies. They formed the perfect
base layer, representing the waterlogged peat that is rich in organic matter.
• Sphagnum moss: A layer of green jelly was used to mimic the moss layer, which helps retain
water and creates the ideal conditions for peat formation.
• Flora and fauna: The students added colourful candies, representing the various plants and
creatures found in a bog’s ecosystem, like the insect-eating sundew plant or the carnivorous
pitcher plant.
• Carbon storage: The chocolate cakes symbolized the stored carbon in peat, highlighting how
bogs function as carbon sinks.

The students then assembled the layers in their edible bogs, learning by doing and having fun with
each step.
The event was an incredible success! Sparking lots of excitement and curiosity in the students. Not
only did they get to learn about the science of bogs but they also discovered how their protection is
essential to tackling climate change.
