The Ballinaglera Biodiversity Project is a local initiative by the Good Energies Alliance Ireland focused on understanding and protecting nature in the area. It explores the state of local biodiversity — from plants and wildlife to habitats — while raising awareness about the growing loss of species both in Ireland and globally.
Through research, education, and community engagement, the project encourages people to value and restore their natural environment, helping to safeguard biodiversity for future generations.
Sustainability
Peatlands, often found in boggy and wetland areas, are crucial ecosystems that play a significant role in climate regulation. They store large amounts of carbon, helping to offset greenhouse gas emissions. However, when drained or disturbed, they can release carbon back into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change.
In Ireland, peatlands have historically been used for turf-cutting, but this has led to significant damage to their biodiversity and carbon storage capacity. Efforts to restore and protect these areas are vital, and GEAI works to promote awareness of their importance for biodiversity conservation and their potential in the fight against climate change.
By focusing on peatlands, GEAI advocates for sustainable land management practices that preserve these unique ecosystems while supporting the transition to renewable energy and carbon-neutral solutions.

At Dowra School, students embarked on a fun and educational journey to explore the wonders of bogs. Through an interactive lesson, they learned how bogs are formed, their vital role in the ecosystem and their importance in combating climate change. To bring the concept to life, the children created their own “edible bogs” using cakes, brownies, and green jelly to represent the various layers of a real bog. This hands-on project allowed the kids to understand the layers of a bog — from waterlogged peat to vibrant plant life — in a sweet and memorable way. It was a fantastic way to combine creativity with environmental education and inspire the next generation of climate-conscious stewards!

On the 17th of May GEAI organised a Biodiversity walk from Ballinaglera Hall via the Leitrim way to St. Hugh’s Holy Well and the adjacent Sweathouse. The afternoon began with quite a few doubts: the weather forecast promised rain throughout the afternoon, with few sunny spells. So the 2.30 pm meet-up at Hall turned into […]
