Recycling can sometimes feel confusing: which bin does this go in? Can this be recycled? What happens to food scraps? During our first workshop for the Sustainable Living Programme, with Barna Recycling, we explored how recycling works in Ireland and how small actions at home can make a big difference for the entire nation.
Green bin – Recycling waste
This bin is for clean and dry recyclable materials such as:
- Clean cardboard and paper;
- Drink cartons;
- Plastic bottles and containers;
- Tins and aluminium cans.
A good rule to remember: If it’s clean and recyclable packaging, it likely goes here.
Black bin – General waste
This bin is for items that cannot be recycled, like:
- Broken items that cannot be repaired;
- Dirty food packaging;
- Non-recyclable plastics.
The goal for this bin is to be as empty as possible.
Brown bin – Organic waste
This is where food scraps and compostable materials go, including: • Bread and grains;
- Coffee grounds and tea bags;
- Fruit and vegetable peels;
- Small garden waste.
These organic materials are collected and turned into compost through industrial composting facilities.
Glass bottles and jars generally fall into three categories: clear glass, green glass and brown glass, each of which is recyclable.
When waste is correctly sorted:
- Landfills receive less waste;
- Organic waste becomes a rich nutrient compost;
- Recycling materials can be turned into new products.
Sorting improperly can contaminate the entire recycling batches, because of that recyclable materials may still end up in landfill and not be recycled.
Small changes create big impact.
Sorting everyday items together and discovering how easy it becomes once you understand the system. By being mindful about what we throw away, we can reduce waste, save resources, and contribute to a cleaner environment.
Thank you Barna Recycling for helping us with your service and commitment to keeping our community clean and sustainable!
