European Solidarity Corps

Volunteering to help in a time of climate crisis.

What is the European Solidarity Corps?

The European Solidarity Corps (ESC) programme is built on a simple idea: young people coming together to support communities while learning from each other.

As a participant, you’re expected to respect others, embrace diversity, and contribute positively to society. This means working collaboratively, respecting local cultures, and helping create an inclusive and supportive environment.

At the same time, organisations hosting you must provide a safe, respectful, and well-structured experience. Everyone plays a part in making the programme meaningful and enjoyable.

A few key things to know:

  • Participation is completely voluntary—you can accept, decline, or leave opportunities freely
  • There are no fees to take part
  • You’ll receive clear information, training, and support throughout your experience
  • Your role will be agreed in a contract before you begin
  • At the end, you’ll receive a certificate recognising your contribution

Overall, the programme is about making a real difference, building connections, and sharing responsibility in a respectful and supportive way.

Our ESC project

GEAI is one of the small number of environmental NGOs in Ireland that focuses on the potential of ESC volunteers to do important work in the area of climate change.

We operate a Climate Action Hub that invites young ESC volunteers to combine work on the environment with lots of opportunities to address their own personal, social and professional development. Working with us for up to a year, our volunteers work with communities and schools to raise awareness of the climate crises, support campaigns, organise events and engage with decision-makers locally, nationally and internationally.

As well as their working experience, our volunteers engage in the social and cultural life of rural Ireland. Where they live is very beautiful with lots of opportunities for walking, cycling, swimming etc. Cultural life is also strong with traditional music sessions and festivals, and of course many traditional pubs. It’s a new and different way of life to be explored. Truly a life-changing experience!
