October blog

Halloween month is officially over. October brought us many wonderful events and trips, as well as multiple wind and rain storms. The latter made the volunteers understand better how it is to live in Ireland.

October tasks:

The volunteers continued working on social media and the school sessions. During the month, they posted 10 instagram posts and 3 blog posts, among others was for example, a short article about previous volunteers of GEAI. The volunteers were very happy to have a chat with the previous volunteers, you can check out their stories by clicking here.

In October, we held the official launch of the GEAI website. It was a great chance for the community to come together and talk about what we are doing right now, as well as other community members talking about their similar activities and suggestions. And now officially: the website is launched! As usual, the work will continue, but GEAI got a lot of good feedback on the website already.

GEAI was very fortunate that another 2 volunteers finally arrived to Ireland from Morocco after all their travel documents were ready. They touched down in Dublin on the 30th of October and are slowly settling in. You will hear more about them soon!

Volunteers’ activities in October:

In addition to work events and happenings, the volunteers and directors of GEAI were fortunate to see the Dervish concert right here in our Ballinaglera Community Hall. The volunteers that had not heard about the band before were very satisfied and enjoyed the concert a lot. Coming from other cultures, it was heartwarming to see the Irish close-knit community vibe the concert created, having some cookies and tea during the break and talking to your neighbours. The band was also brilliant and the concert didn’t end until just before midnight.

Since the volunteer group is now complete, the whole group went to Carrick-On-Shannon on Halloween eve to get to know each other more and to get acquainted with the Irish Halloween culture. It was actually the first time they went out in Carrick and it was very good craic, they will probably have to go there more often.

Activities list:
  • Dervish concert – would definitely go again!
  • Trip to Strandhill – beautiful oceanside walking trails and lovely cafés
  • Cultural visits to some of Leitrim’s catholic churches – the churches are really beautiful with the gorgeous stained glass windows
  • Trip to Kilronan castle and hiking trails – gorgeous castle and amazing nature
  • Halloween in Carrick-On-Shannon – fun!
