For the past few months, we at GEAI have had the privilege of working with a group of Transition Year students from Lough Allen College as part of an inspiring initiative called Youth Participation. This programme, created by young people for young people and funded by Erasmus+, aims to promote democracy, youth empowerment, and environmental action at the heart of the community.
The project kicked off in February with an initial event in which students presented a proposal on reducing consumption—an urgent environmental issue—to their peers. The event was a great success and marked the beginning of a journey that will take them far beyond the walls of their school.
In the coming months, the students will have the opportunity to present their ideas to representatives from Leitrim County Council, the Oireachtas, and finally, the European Parliament in Brussels. This will be a hands-on, transformative experience—one that offers them not only an understanding of how democratic systems work, but also a chance to make their voices heard on issues that affect their future and the planet.
They will be supported throughout the process by our dedicated volunteers, who are also taking part in workshops and training sessions to strengthen youth voices and civic engagement. Together, they’re discovering the power of active citizenship and learning that their voices don’t just matter—they can make a real and lasting impact.

The students will also continue researching environmental challenges in their local area, developing solutions and proposals that reflect a genuine commitment to sustainability and community wellbeing. This blend of practical learning, intergenerational cooperation, and direct engagement with democratic institutions makes the project an incredibly enriching and empowering experience.
At GEAI, we believe that civic education, combined with climate action, has the potential to transform communities from the ground up. Supporting these young changemakers is a true source of pride and inspiration.
We’ll continue sharing updates from this powerful journey that’s already leaving a positive mark.
Thank you for joining us on the path towards a greener, fairer, and more inclusive future!
